'#restaurantathome #mysore #mughlai home eatery in mysore, royal mess, mughlai, hyderabadi cuisine, mutton kheema, mutton masala, butter chicken, korma, biryani, kheer, sameena khanum, homestyle food in mysore When Sameena Khanum’s husband retired from his job overseas, she decided to do something on her own to support the family. Her love for cooking led her to open a tiny eatery at home with two tables only, catering initially to college students yearning for home-cooked meals. Entirely self-taught, Mrs. Khanum serves up a repertoire of Hyderabadi-Mughlai dishes, assisted by her husband and children. A meal here is not just about delicious sustenance but also about the warming hospitality with which one is welcomed and served, as I discovered when I dropped into Royal Mess late one evening. Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and happy eating! Mutton Kheema The mutton kheema is coarse and grainy, cooked with meat on the bone, that results in a deep-flavoured, warming dish. The sort that makes it a must-try here. Rs. 350 (usd 4.8) for a large portion. 9/10 Mutton Masala Flavoured with the gentle sweet flavours of fresh tomato and the savouriness of onions, the masala is tasty. The meat is soft, there’s a bit of fat that one needs to work through. One could request for slightly less fat, makes for an enjoyable dish. Rs. 400 (usd 5.5) for a large portion. 8.5/10 Chilli Chicken A homestyle chilli chicken that is spiced with green chillies and red chilli powder and plenty of garlic. There are onions and capsicum too. A chilli chicken that isn’t as spicy as one would expect it to be. Rs. 220 (usd 3) for a large portion. 7.5/10 Butter Chicken A rich cashew nut gravy that had a tad too much dried fenugreek garnish for my liking, the meat, a bit of a bite. Rs. 220 (usd 3) for a large portion. 7/10 Chicken Biryani Made with long-grained basmati rice, the flavourful masala is an amalgam of fried onions, tomatoes, yoghurt and Mrs. Khanum’s home-blended spice mix. The biryani had cooled down a bit, rendering the rice slightly dry and the meat a fibrous bite. Ensure that you arrive at Royal Mess when the biryani is freshly made to savour this preparation. Rs. 175 (usd 2.4) 7.5/10 Kripal Amanna, Gourmet On The Road, Food Lovers TV TIMINGS: 1230pm to 1030pm Note: Portions are large and easily shared between two people.
